I had a scary thought today...

It's devastating enough that our Gulf waters are now soiled with millions of barrels of crude oil, not to mention the toxic dispersant BP is spraying all over to make it look less disastrous. Not only is this compound less effective, but has been positively linked to respiratory, nervous system, liver, kidney, reproductive and blood disorders. So as a Virginia resident, I'm forced to wonder...

What happens when hurricane season arrives?

Not only will the coastal areas be affected by oil washing ashore on their beaches and killing the marine industry, but every state from Maryland to Texas will be drenched in filthy, oil-soaked poison. Livestock will be sickened. Crops will be tainted. Property will be coated in a thin film of crude.

How's that "Drill, Baby, Drill" thing workin' out for ya?

I hear ya, MC. I hadn't thought about the hurricane aspect, but I heard someone talking the other day about what happens when the oil seeps into the gulf stream. Fan-friggin-tastic.

They have already discovered massive "rivers" of crude oil beneath the surface, where the dispersants cannot affect them. What isn't washing ashore in LA, MS and AL will most likely follow the Gulf's "Loop Current," which will slingshot it around Florida and right up the eastern seaboard.
